Beer of the Weekend #974: Lake Loop

The beer of the weekend is from an Iowa brewery I have not drunk anything from in a very long time: Lake Loop, brewed by the Peace Tree Brewing Company of Knoxville, Iowa.

Lake Loop

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “03/18/22” is printed on the bottom of the can, which I assume is the canning date.

Appearance: Opaque hazy, and the color is light to medium gold. A finger of buttery, bubbly white foam dissipates slowly and unevenly.

Smell: It smells like a tropical smoothie. It is nuanced instead of in-your-face tropical; it’s a subtle, tropical melange. Nothing stands out, but I get hints of pineapple, grapefruit, and cara cara orange. It evokes images of segmented grapefruit and orange pieces on a cutting board wet with their delicious juices.

Taste: The first sip is sharp and sour dose of lemon, which I was not expecting. It is more akin to citrus fruit seeds and zest than the flesh or juice. The lemon sharpness and bitterness remains throughout the pint, drowning out any other tropical or citrus flavors, which is a bummer because the aroma is quite promising. I assume it is because of the can’s age; the tropical flavors faded over time.

Fun facts about Lake Loop:

• Style: Pale Ale.

• Price: $10.99 for a sixer at Benz Beverage Depot in Cedar Rapids.

• Alcohol content: 5% ABV.

• Peace Tree’s brewpub in Knoxville is a nice place to chill and drink a beer. I recommend it if you ever find yourself in the area. Peace Tree also has a location in downtown Des Moines now.

The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
