Beer of the Weekend #963: Garret's Got a Goat Named Garth

I’m still behind on beer reviews, but that’s OK.

The beer of the weekend last weekend was Garret’s Got a Goat Named Garth, brewed by the ReUnion Brewery of Coralville, Iowa.

Garret's got a Goat Named Garth

Yes, that’s right: there is no possessive apostrophe in “Garrets” on the can. I don’t know why. It’s probably just a typo. Regardless, it is another reason I should market my copyediting skills to brewers.

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “CANNED 10/21/21” is printed on the bottom.

Appearance: Poured into a pilsner glass. The color is medium caramel. A half-finger of bubble-spotted, buttery, off-white head leaves a collar and skim.

Smell: Dark fruit is prominent, but the aroma is muted overall. There are scents of cherry, caramel, and burnt sugar, raisins, cocoa, maybe figs.

Taste: It mostly mirrors the aroma and is also muted. There are flavors of cherry, caramel, burnt sugar, raisins, cocoa, and maybe figs.

Fun facts about Garret’s Got a Goat Named Garth:

• Style: Doppelbock.

• Price: $10.99 for a sixer of 12-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: The ABV is listed as 6.8 percent on BeerAdvocate.

• Here is the description from the can:

Our traditional Dopplebock named after our good friend Garret’s goat named Garth. This rambunctious lager is brewed with 100% German Munich malt and boiled for 3 hours giving it bold but smooth notes of dried fruit, rich bready malt and hints of cocoa.

See what I mean about brewers needing copyediting skills?

The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
