Beer of the Weekend #956: Oktobot 3000

I was finally able to get my hands on an Oktoberfest beer I have wanted to try for a while: Oktobot 3000, brewed by the Lion Bridge Brewing Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Oktobot 3000

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “08/23/2021” is printed on the bottom.

Appearance: Poured into a stange. The color is a dark ruby that leans brown. Two fingers of thick, light tan head dissipates slowly, leaving lacing.

Smell: It’s boozy, and one can smell the barrel-aging character while pouring. There are scents of whiskey-soaked barrel wood, caramel, and cherry licorice. There is also a bit of chocolate, though the booze and licorice dominate.

Taste: Boozy. It has that hot toddy/whiskey taste. It dominates. The flavor is very different from the scent; it is much darker and boozy. Molasses and burnt sugar are in the mix. Cherry licorice emerges after the beer has warmed.

Fun facts about Oktobot 3000:

• Style: Märzen.

• Price: I can’t find the receipt, but I think it was like $12 or more for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 8.5 percent ABV.

• Here is the description via the Lion Bridge website:

A fusion brew with Garman and Czech roots in the recipe as well as the name ("robot" is a word with Czech origins). Munich and Bohemian Pilsner malt are the motherboard to this amped up version of the style, while 7 months in a Willett Rye Whiskey barrels greases the cogs and make sure it all computes.

The Quiet man’s grade: B+
