Beer of the Weekend #895: Centaurus

The beer of the weekend is another bicycle-themed beer: Centaurus, brewed by the Lion Bridge Brewing Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The color is hazy golden amber. A finger of beige-colored head leaves a skim and buttery ring around the edge.

The aroma is very juicy, bursting with a blend of orange, pineapple, mango, lemon, a touch of ruby red grapefruit, red licorice, and arboreal hops. Woo—what an amazing aroma!

The flavor is smooth and easy drinking. It is more citrusy than tropical with grapefruit, lemon, and orange, but the tropical notes do emerge slowly. The hops are much more prominent, providing a pleasant pine character that settles on the tonsils. Peach is also noticeable. True to what is written on the can, it is very crushable.

Fun facts about Centaurus:

• Style: Session IPA.

• Price: $10.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans.

• Alcohol content: 5.2 percent ABV.

• Centaurus is Lion Bridge’s summer IPA. It is, according to the Lion Bridge website, “an ode to the half human, half bicycle creatures that roam the Iowa plains during these agreeable months.”

• Iowa’s summer months are agreeable? That’s a subjective opinion. There are ideal days, but hot and humid stretches are not agreeable for me. However, I suppose it’s agreeable whenever the trails are dry.

The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.
