Beer of the Weekend #846: Stiegl Lemon Radler

On the first Friday of my vacation last month, The Loud Sister, J-Rod, and I went to an I-Cubs night game. It had been insanely hot and humid all week—upper 90s with heat indices reaching 110—so the thought of drinking a beer at the ballpark did not appeal to me at all. (It is almost sacrilegious to go a baseball game and not drink a beer.)

However, sometime during the middle innings, J-Rod returned to our seats with a can of lemon-flavored Stiegl radler. Damn! I thought. I have to get me one of those. Soon afterward, I’d bought a can of the same thing from the cool (literally) walk-in cooler on the concourse behind home plate. Oh man, did it taste good!

While many stores have Stiegl’s grapefruit-flavored radler, I did not see the lemon (Zitrone) version . . . until yesterday.

The beer of the weekend is Stiegl Lemon Radler, brewed by the Stieglbrauerei zu Salzburg GmbH of Salzburg, Austria.

Poured into my Pinkus weizen glass. (Weizen glasses, I learned, are also good for serving fruit beer like radler.) The color is cloudy, pale straw. Basically, it looks a lot like lemonade. The aroma is fresh, juicy, and inviting with scents of lemonade and lemon soda. It reminds me a lot of lemon drops. Wooo—this is summertime drinking! The first sip reminds me a lot of Sprite but with much more lemon flavor. For some reason, the long-gone Citra comes to mind, though I can’t remember how it tasted. (According to Wikipedia, Citra was grapefruit flavored. There goes that comparison.) It has that soda softness and lemonade flavor and tartness. It is tasty, enjoyable, easy-drinking stuff!
