Beer of the Weekend #648: DayTime Ale
Merry Christmas!
It has been a busy day, but I was able to review DayTime Ale, brewed by the Lagunitas Brewing Company of Petaluma, California, between a quick run and making vegetarian tatter-tot casserole (to make up for all the calories I burned on that quick run).
Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. No freshness date.
Appearance: Pours a clean, clear, gold color into a pint glass. Two fingers of fluffy, white head dissipates after a couple minutes. The foam leaves a little lacing along the glass.
Smell: Oooo! A bouquet of citrus and tropical fruit greets the nose. Kiwi, pineapple, tangerine, orange, grapefruit, and lemon zest. It is very invigorating. If malts are noticeable, I do not care. I am too eager to take a first sip!
Taste: Though relatively light, the mouthfeel is creamy. The flavor delivers and is quite zesty and hoppy. It is not as tropical as the aroma, though. Hoppy citrus with flavors of lemon, tangerine, and a little grapefruit. Pale malt tempers the citrus and bitterness. The grapefruit does become a little more prominent, though, and the hops leave an astringent aftertaste.
Drinkability: Instead of “fractional,” I thought the label said, “functional IPA.” Oops. Regardless, it is quite functional, especially since it would be an ideal daytime drinking IPA. It is good stuff but I wish the tropical fruit was more prominent in the flavor.
