Beer of the Weekend #519: Zombie Monkie
About a month ago, I procured a sample can for an upcoming Tallgrass release. It was excellent and I have been eagerly awaiting its release. It hit the shelves recently and I have gladly made it the beer of the weekend: Zombie Monkie, brewed by the Tallgrass Brewing Company of Manhattan, Kansas.
Serving type: 16-ounce can. The “DRINK BY” date printed on the bottom is “03/01/14.”
Appearance: Poured into a nonic pint glass. The color is almost opaque black. When held to a lamp, light does not pass through but the backlighting changes the beer’s color to deep amber brown. Two fingers of dense, tan head dissipates slowly, leaving trails of foam along the glass.
Smell: Delicious and enticing. Lightly roasted malts and espresso are most prominent, commanding each whiff. Scents of creamy, milk chocolate and oats are also prominent, trying to balance the roasted bitterness. It makes me realize I have not had a dark beer in forever.
Taste: Roasty, much like the smell. The roasted malts and coffee characteristics are most prominent, but the bitterness is well-balanced by the other malts. Underneath is the flavor of dark chocolate.
Drinkability: Dark, roasty, and chocolaty. This is high-quality and tasty stuff. It truly is quite apocalyptic for a porter.
Fun facts about Zombie Monkie:
-Style: Tallglass calls it “Post-Apocalyptic Porter.”
-Price: $8.99/four-pack at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City.
-Alcohol content: 6.2 percent ABV.
-IBU: 35.
-Zombie nerdiness from the Tallgrass website:
-One of the cool features of the Zombie Monkie can is the raised texture of monkey “fur.” It is advertised as a “Tactical grip can. To prevent slippage while fleeing.”
The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.

A robust porter inspired by approximately true events…
Zombie Monkie is a dark, rich porter, carefully brewed for the post-apocalyptic world to come. Crafted with lots of roasty dark chocolate and specialty malts, then inoculated with enough hops to add a floral/citrus character in the finish. It's hardy, complex, and interesting, because you might be drinking it for a long time. Zombie Monkie...
