Beer of the Weekend #415: Old Fezziwig Ale

Another night, another beer — though I am not complaining. (For the last couple nights I have been working on my latest piece for the LV, which is why I have not posted anything of substance in 2013 yet.)

The beer tonight is Old Fezziwig Ale, brewed by the Boston Beer Company of Boston, Massachusetts.


Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. “MAY” is the “enjoy before” month notched on the side of the label.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is light mahogany. About two fingers of dense, buttery, lightly tanned head dissipated slowly.

Smell: It’s a battle between malts and festive spice! I think the malts win, though — which I have no problem with. Caramel, toffee, maple syrup, plum, cherry licorice, black raspberry. Underneath is a little cinnamon and ginger, and it also smells a little like dirty socks. Weird.

Taste: There is a nice balance between the malts and holiday spice. Toasted malts, caramel, toffee, a bit of burnt syrup or maybe molasses, cocoa, plum, and cherry licorice. Cinnamon is the most noticeable spice, and herbal hops help counter the malts.

Drinkability: Before opening the bottle, I expected the festive winter spices to dominate. However, it is surprisingly balanced. I would definitely consider buying this again, though in a sixer of itself. (I think it is only available in the seasonal sampler.)

-Style: BA classifies it as “Winter Warmer.”

-Price: No clue. It was part of J-Rod’s Samuel Adams’ seasonal sampler.

-Serving temperature: 45-50ºF.

-Alcohol content: 5.8 percent ABV.

-Food pairings: The beer’s webpage suggests matching “the cinnamon and ginger of carrot cake with the similar flavors found in a malty and spicy Old Fezziwig.”

-IBU: 25.

-Color: 38 SRM.

-Calories: 213 per 12-ounce bottle.

-First brewed in 1995, Old Fezziwig is a seasonal available from November to January.
