Meat Puppets, "Backwater"

I don’t know what it is, but the rock stations in Eastern Iowa play some good shit.

Normally I’m a Rock 108 guy (that’s another good post I’ll have to write while I’m back), but recently I’ve been listening to KRNA late at night because Rock 108 airs the syndicated “Hard Drive XL” instead of using an in-studio evening drive disc jockey. I have problems with KRNA — they’re pimped by Cumulus and have changed formats two or three times since I was in college — but I hate Lou Brutus more.

The other night, while driving to my friend’s apartment with KRNA cracked, “Backwater” started playing. I parked the car and kept the radio on while the song played out. It sounded great, and I waited for the end so the DJ could give up the track information (I had no clue what the title or artist was). But another song started afterward and I wasn’t patient enough to sit through it, so I got out. I tried remembering a couple of the lyrics so I could look them up later, but they faded from memory after a couple Peebers.

Tonight, while driving Tom back from the Iowa game, KRNA played the song again. I told Tom I didn’t know what it was, but though it was a good tune. I turned up the volume and we both listened. Tom agreed it sounded good, and a little old school (what genre of music is better than “old school”?). This time I made sure I memorized a few lines to plug into Google. When I got home I found the links to the Meat Puppets.

Once again, my grunge background comes through. Rock 108 would never play the Meat Puppets; Rock is way too metal for that. KRNA is, traditionally, more of a college rock station, and it pleases me to know the station has kind of realigned with its Iowa City/college town roots. I’m sure no other Cumulus stations are playing Meat Puppets; unless, of course, Cumulus is owned/owns the label Meat Puppets released the album on. Either way, “Backwater” is a good tune. I hope you like it.
