Beer of the Weekened #1,152: Cooler Nights IPA

The fam returned to Dauphin Island for spring break, and I hit the ol’ Ship and Shore to grab some southern beer, including Cooler Nights IPA, brewed by Hi-Wire Brewing of Asheville, North Carolina.

Cooler Nights IPA

The can says it is brewed and canned by the Three Ring Brewing Company, which is probably the contract brewer.

Serving type: 16-ounce can. No freshness date.

Appearance: The color is a light and slightly hazy amber. A dense, bubbly, buttery, off-white head settles slowly and unevenly, leaving foam stuck to the glass.

Smell: Juicy and citrusy. Grapefruit, orange, and maybe some pineapple. Slight caramel and earthy and arboreal hops.

Taste: Smooth, tasty, and slightly hoppy. The citrus is subdued. Earthy/arboreal hops tingle the taste buds. Caramel. It is mostly hoppy with a solid caramel base.

Fun facts about Cooler Nights IPA:

• Style: West Coast IPA.

• Price: Around $13 for what I think was a 6-pack of 16-ounce cans at the Ship and Shore in Dauphin Island, Alabama. The receipt does not include the name of each beer I bought, so it was $12.79, $14.59, or $12.19.

• Alcohol content: 6.5 percent ABV.

• The sales tax in Dauphin Island is 10%. That includes the 4% state sales tax plus whatever county or city sales tax.

• Here is the description via the brewery website:

Cooler Nights IPA is a classic West Coast-style IPA where bright citrus flavors from Citra play well with the piney and dank character of Chinook and Columbus. Built for crisp and chilly evenings of winter, a touch of maltiness holds up to the true hallmark of the style – a firm, balanced bitterness and clean finish.

• The birth date the cashier imputed for me was March 8, 2001—when I was 18.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B-/C+.
