Beer of the Weekend #1,147: Zumwalt
The first beer of the weekend of 2026 is a style I have not had in a long time—and seemingly the only reasonably priced dark beer at John’s that I have not tried yet (in the walk-in cooler, at least): Zumwalt, brewed by the More Brewing Company of Villa Park, Illinois.

Serving type: 16-ounce can. There is no freshness date.
Appearance: Pours a mostly opaque black into my snifter. A tan, bubbly, buttery head fizzles away and leaves a broken skim and thick collar. It seems very effervescent for a porter.
Smell: Oooo! It has been a while since I had something like this. Dark fruit (probably plum), raisin, molasses, dark chocolate, caramel, and a touch of coffee. It is not much roast, surprisingly.
Taste: Delicious and surprisingly thick and creamy (I expected it to be thinner given the fizzy head). Dark malt, but it is not overly roasted or bitter. Dark fruit, dark chocolate, molasses, caramel, cherry, brown sugar, light roast, and coffee. It is kind of intense.
Fun facts about Zumwalt:
• Style: Baltic porter. I can’t even remember the last time I had a Baltic porter. (It was apparently 2018 after a search through the ol’ blog.)
• Price: $12.99 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans at John’s Grocery.
• Alcohol content: 7.6 percent ABV.
• What is the story behind the name and can art? I have no clue because there is no information about either. It seems like the days of breweries having their own websites and informative pages for each beer are over.
The Quiet Man’s grade: A.
