Beer of the Weekend #1,058: Prowl

Roar!

The beer of the weekend is the UNI equivalent of Swarm: Prowl, brewed by Single Speed Brewing of Waterloo, Iowa.

Prowl

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “CANNED ON 11/08/23 09:23” is printed on the shoulder.

Appearance: Poured into a pilsner glass. The color is clear light gold. A finger of off-white, bubbly, buttery head settles slowly and evenly. A lot of bubbles stick to the bottom of the glass and rise to the top.

Smell: Light and inoffensive. It smells like a classic macro, though maybe with some real malt. There is no zest, though. It reminds me of cream ale. It has some light hop spice.

Taste: Light and easy drinking with a zing. It mostly mirrors the aroma. Malt, melon, and light hop spice. The spice lingers on the taste buds.

Fun facts about Prowl:

• Style: Single Speed calls it golden ale.

• Price: $10.39 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans from Gary’s in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

• Alcohol content: 4.2 percent ABV.

• Prowl is a collaboration between Single Speed and the Panther Collective, which is:

a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation with the goal of helping the University of Northern Iowa Men's & Women's Basketball athletes in amplifying their NIL opportunities by contributing their time and talents through work with non-profits, being active in our communities, and providing mentorship to future generations. • Here is the description from the Single Speed website: “Brewed in partnership with The Panther Collective, for the benefit of student athletes. Crafted w/ Game Day celebrations in mind, this golden ale hits as crisp and refreshing as a victory for the Purple & Gold.”

• I used to despise the UNI men’s basketball team. Before moving to the McLeod Center in 2006, the Panthers played basketball in the UNI-Dome and the Hawks never played well there. (I once heard that the bigger stadium messed with the players’ depth perception.) No matter how good or highly ranked the Hawks were, they had trouble winning in Cedar Falls. It really frustrated me. I have since made my peace with the Panthers.

• Speaking of the Hawkeye and Panther men playing each other in men’s basketball, I think that should be an annual thing again. It was for a long time, then moved to every other year during the Big Four Classic years. The Iowa and UNI men’s teams have not played each other since 2018. The same goes for Iowa and Drake.

• Looking at my receipt, I noticed that my purchase took place at 17:17:17.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
