Beer of the Weekend #1,056: Brav

The beer a few weekends ago was Brav, brewed by the Grange Public House & Brewery of Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

Brav

Serving type: 16-ounce can. “CANNED 10/18/22 DRINK ME” is printed on the bottom. This is an old can. I was so excited to find an Iowa-brewed wee heavy that I did not check the freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into my Number One Pint Glass. The color is deep ruddy caramel. A lot of bubbles stick to the glass, much like a pop. A finger of tan, buttery head leaves a broken skim.

Smell: It is a touch smoky with a lot of caramel. There are scents of cherry, licorice, peat, burnt sugar, maple syrup, and light chocolate.

Taste: Flavorful but flat, which is probably due to the age. It is still tasty, though. There is a lot of caramel and thick syrupy stuff. Cherry licorice, burnt sugar, smoked malt, peat, molasses, and maple syrup. A smoky bitterness lingers on the taste buds. It is strong stuff, boozy and almost whiskey-like. It’s a sipper.

Fun facts about Brav:

• Style: Wee heavy.

• Price: $11.99 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City. That is one thing I forgot about the beer selection at the IC co-op: some beers can be pretty old so I would recommend always checking for a date. The store carried a beer I really wanted to try, but the bottles were years old. I eventually told one of the staff members and they pulled them from the shelf. They had apparently just gotten a case from the distributor.

• Alcohol content: 8 percent ABV.

The Quiet Man’s grade: C.
