Beer of the Weekend #964: West Eddy

The beer of the weekend last weekend was West Eddy, brewed by the Big Grove Brewery of Iowa City, Iowa.

West Eddy

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “02/16/2022” is printed on the bottom of the can, so this is really fresh stuff.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is hazy yellow. A finger of white, buttery head leaves a bubbly skim.

Smell: It is citrusy and tropical but muted. It is bright and inviting. The individual characters are mostly indistinctive for me. The description on the can mentions stone fruit and guava, but I am not familiar enough with either to pick them out. I do get peach, which is also mentioned on the can.

Taste: It is a pleasant melange of tropical fruit and citrus, though nothing stands out to me. It has a smoothie character and is zesty. It has a nice hoppy bite, though it does not linger long on the taste buds. It is a pretty good beer.

Fun facts about West Eddy:

• Style: West Coast IPA.

• Price: $10.49 for a sixer of 12-ounce bottles at Gary’s in Mount Vernon.

• Alcohol content: 6.8 percent ABV.

• West Eddy is the West Coast cousin of Big Grove’s Easy Eddy. I have both in my fridge, so The Foxy Lady and I did a side-by-side tasting to see if they were just slightly different versions of one another. Easy Eddy is much more aromatic, but West Eddy is much more delicate and nuanced.

The Quiet Man’s grade: A-.
