Beer of the Weekend #931: Ellie's Brown Ale

I’ve been craving a brown ale, so I bought a six-pack of Ellie’s Brown Ale, brewed by the Avery Brewing Company of Boulder, Colorado.

Ellie's Brown Ale

The color is dark mahogany. A finger of creama colored and buttery head settles evenly and fairly quickly, leaving a skim and thick collar.

The aroma is toasty and inviting. The first whiff is earthy and sharp, metallic. It gives way to scents of toasted malt, caramel, and cocoa. It has a dark fruit ester, maybe cherry. It also has a maple syrup element, as well as brown sugar.

The mouthfeel is smooth and slightly creamy. It’s toasty and has an earthy bite. It’s not as complex as the aroma; it’s slightly disappointing by comparison. The toast is prominent and lingers on the taste buds. The bitterness mellows and caramel, cocoa, brown sugar, and maple syrup elements shine through but don’t outshine the toast and bitterness.

Fun facts about Ellie’s Brown Ale:

• Style: Avery calls it “American brown ale.”

• Price: $9.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 5.5 percent ABV.

• Calories: 165 per 12-ounce serving (estimate).

• Here is the description via the Avery website:

This beautiful, deep russet brew is dominated by a chocolate and brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, producing a very smooth, well-balanced, and quaffable brown ale. Originally named Elle's Brown Ale after Adam Avery's beloved chocolate lab, however one Cease and Desist letter from a certain fashion publication later, this classic American Brown Ale was renamed as Ellie. Elle didn't mind. Ellie's Brown Ale has all the characteristics of its namesake; friendly, mellow, and a little nutty. As Adam's best friend, she came with him to work everyday and was a steadfast companion for all his climbing adventures. Elle is missed, but she lives on in this beer as the mascot on the label.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
