Beer of the Weekend #918: Pecatonica IPA

My dad made a cheese run to our ancestral homeland of Lafayette County, Wisconsin, so I had him pick up a sixer of Pecatonica IPA, brewed by the Pecatonica Beer Company of Gratiot, Wisconsin.

The color is turbid medium amber. A half finger of white head leaves an even skim, a spot of bubbles, and a collar.

The aroma is arboreal and citrusy with scents of grapefruit, pine, orange, and earthy spice. It tingles the nose hairs. There is also a hint of caramel.

The flavor is bitter goodness. It’s a pleasing medley of hops and malt. There are flavors of grapefruit, pine, orange, earthy spice, and hints of caramel and cherry licorice. The bitterness works the taste buds and lingers after each sip. The caramel becomes candy-like as the beer continues to warm, but the bitterness remains.

• Price: My dad thinks it was $8.99 at the Roelli Cheese Haus on Wisconsin Highway 11 in Shellsburg, Wisconsin.

• Calories: 180 per 12 ounces (estimate).
