Beer of the Weekend #796: Our Lightest Beer

It’s Wednesday — time for a beer.

The beer tonight is Our Lightest Beer, brewed by the Iowa City Brewlab of Iowa City, Iowa.

The color is hazy yellow — which, I’ll admit, makes it look like a glass full of piss. It smells and tastes better, thankfully. Not much head or foam develops except for a small ring around the edge and a spiral of skim. The aroma is malty and zesty; it is musty and a little yeasty, too. It is reminiscent of a light summer wit, or maybe even a saison without intense funk. The flavor mostly mirrors the aroma with lots of malt tinged with zest and yeast. It has a pleasing, floral bitterness. The brewery’s description mentions pear, but I’m not much a pear person and can’t tell if it is there or not. It definitely tastes like a cream ale; it is even reminiscent of Spotted Cow. It is a very light, refreshing, and flavorful beer worthy of late summer.

Fun facts about Our Lightest Beer:

• Style: Cream ale.

• Price: $8 for a 32-ounce growler fill.

• Alcohol content: 5.1 percent ABV

• IBU: 15.

• Though a little odd, the name is pretty clever. Since customers often ask “What’s your lightest beer?” the Brewlab decided to name its lightest beer Our Lightest Beer.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
