Beer of the Weekend #769: Xtra-Citra Pale Ale
The beer of the weekend is Xtra-Citra Pale Ale, brewed by the Surly Brewing Company of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
The color is hazy, light amber. A finger of bubbly, off-white head settles fairly quickly and leaves a spotted skim and bubbly ring around the edge. A couple short trails of lacing are stuck to the glass but there is nothing substantial. The aroma is citrusy with touches of fruit; there are scents of grapefruit, orange, lemon zest, a touch of pineapple, and floral hops. The flavor is light and zesty with a prominent floral bitterness that provides an adequate bite. There is also light tropical fruit. It’s ho-hum but would be good drinking on a warm summer day at a campsite.
Fun facts about X-CPA:
• Style: Pale ale.
• Price: Shit — I forgot to grab the receipt! I bought it at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City and think it was $8.99 per four-pack of 16-ounce cans.
• Alcohol content: 4.5 percent ABV.
The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
