2011 IHSAA Football, Week 8
None of the local high school football games tonight were appealing, so I decided to chill out chez Bobblehead. My dad suggested going to the Williamsburg-Clear Creek Amana game, but the CCA Clippers are 0-7 and were overmatched. The final score was 52-24 in Williamsburg’s favor, so I think it was best to stay in.
City High lost to Linn-Mar, 17-12. I knew the Little Hawks would be returning to IC with a second loss, but thought the score would have been much more lopsided. Both teams lit up the scoreboard in both meetings last year, both City High victories. The Little Hawk defense is just as porous as it was last year, and the offense is much less explosive. The Lions, on the other hand, are just as good as they were last year. Tonight they stonewalled the City High running game (basically one guy), but did not produce the kind of offense I expected.
Though the teams have not played every year, City High’s loss tonight was only the second time they have been beaten by Linn-Mar since 1992. That loss came in 1994 at Linn-Mar. I remember listening to that game on the radio. Later that year, the Little Hawks beat Linn-Mar in the 4A championship game. I doubt that will happen again this year.
The big surprise tonight: Cedar Rapids Washington beat IC West, 66-37. Two weeks ago Washington upset City High. Last week they were blanked. And this week they destroyed the Trojans, which is no small feat. It seems Washington has a different team every week.
