October 22nd
Today is my birthday. I'm 26.
October 22nd is a good birthday, if you ask me. Of course I’m a little biased, but what can I say? I am forever intertwined and in cahoots with the date. It has never been a normal, uneventful day, like, say, March 3rd or August 15th. Those days have never been “mine.” Written out, October 22nd just looks cool to me. October 22. Even when it’s abbreviated it has that same, distinctive coolness. 10/22. It’s humble, yet important.

-362: The temple of Apollo at Daphne, outside of Antioch, is destroyed in a mysterious fire.
-1924: Toastmasters International is founded. (It has nothing to do with toast — I checked — but I still love toast.)
-1934: Bank robber Pretty Boy Floyd is gunned down by FBI agents in East Liverpool, Ohio.
-1943: On the night of the 22nd/23rd, the Royal Air Force firebombs the city of Kassel, Germany, a city of 236,000 citizens. Ten thousand are killed and 150,000 become homeless.
-1962: President Kennedy announced to the nation that the Soviet Union had missiles in Cuba. A naval blockade of the island is ordered, initiating the Cuban Missile Crisis.
-1964: French author Jean-Paul Sartre is awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, but turns down the honor.
-2008: India launches it’s first unmanned lunar spacecraft.
