Beer of the Weekend #892: Extinction Event (Bravo + Citra + Simcoe)
The beer of the weekend is another edition of Confluence’s New England–style IPA series: Extinction Event (Bravo + Citra + Simcoe), brewed by the Confluence Brewing Company of Des Moines, Iowa.
The color is cloudy golden amber that is somewhat reminiscent of orange juice. A finger of beige, bubbly head does not stick around to make much of an impression, but it leaves a collar of bubbly foam and a broken skim.
The aroma is juicy and tropical, reminiscent of the pineapple slush my uncle served for Christmas or an Orange Julius. Pineapple is most prominent, but orange is also present. It has earthy undertones too, and there is also a hint of that weird yeast nastiness that plagues NEIPAs.
The flavor is much like the aroma, but pineapple is not as prominent. It’s not as tropical or juicy. The fruit and tropical characters are present, but they are overshadowed by the earthiness and yeast. It’s soft, smooth, and easy drinking, but overall it is nothing special. To be fair, these can may be on the old side.
Fun facts about EE(B+C+S):
• Style. New England IPA.
• Price: $11.99 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City. “EXTINCT ON SEP/17/18” is written on the bottom of the can.
• Alcohol content: 6.2 percent ABV.
• There are three Extinction Event editions listed on the Confluence website, and B+C+S is the second. So, I assume that means this four-pack of B+C+S has been sitting around for a while.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
