Beer of the Weekend #568: Busch Signature Copper Lager
I have begun writing beer reviews for the LV website. The current plan is to publish two per month, but we’ll see how it goes. I sometimes think about not writing for them anymore and here I am writing more. Anyway, they told me they needed “original” material so I should not post anything on my blog until after each review is published.
So here it is: Busch Signature Copper Lager, brewed by Anheuser-Busch InBev of Leuven, Belgium (it was probably brewed in St. Louis).
Serving type: 16-ounce can. “17FEB14” is the “BORN ON” date printed on the bottom of the can.
Appearance: Poured into a nonick pint glass. The color is light brown with an amber tint; it reminds me a little of brown sugar. Two fingers of fizzy head dissipated so quickly I did not catch its color.
Smell: Lots of pale malt and adjunct grain, though there is quite a bit of toasted malt. There are also scents of caramel, brown sugar, and a little dark cherry.
Taste: The mouthfeel is pretty thin. The pale malt and adjunct grain are prominent at first but the toasted malt eventually reveals itself and lends the beer good flavor. There is just a little bit of smoke as well, which is a pleasant surprise. Caramel and toffee are also present, as well as a little cherry licorice. It also has a nice bitterness, too, very reminiscent of one’s first beer.
Drinkability: It’s Busch with flavor! It is very drinkable and a step up for the Busch brand.

-Price: $5.99/sixer at the Drug Town on First Avenue in Iowa City. Six bucks for 96 ounces of beer? Now that’s a pretty good deal.
