Beer of the Weekend #567: India Red Ale
The beer of the weekend is from a brewery that started distributing in Iowa this week: India Red Ale, brewed by the Zipline Brewing Company of Lincoln, Nebraska.
Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. The “BOTTLED” date written along the side of the label is “2014.02.14.”
Appearance: Poured into a tulip glass. The color is cloudy, ruby-amber. A finger of buttery, dense, light tan head leaves a bubbly skim and shiny ring around the edge.
Smell: It is a somewhat muted blend of citrus, tropical fruit, hops, and malts. There are scents of tangerine, mango, gritty floral hops, toasted malts, chocolate, and caramel.
Taste: The mouthfeel is creamy and full-bodied. The overall flavor is a pleasing blend, but none of the individual elements stand out above the rest. Floral hops, tangerine, mango, toasted malts, and caramel. Honey and a subtle alcohol presence make it somewhat reminiscent of a hot toddy. The hops leave a lasting and astringent bitterness. After the beer has warmed, a little pine sneaks in.
Drinkability: This is good stuff. However, it almost seems like a run of the mill double IPA.
Fun facts about India Red Ale:
-Style: Basically, it is a red ale and IPA hybrid.
-Price: $7.99/sixer at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.
-Serving temperature: “46ยบ” is written on the label.
-Alcohol content: 7.1 percent ABV.
-IBU: 65.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
