Beer of the Weekend #1,078: Munich Weiss
School is out, which means summer has begun at my house. Fittingly, the beer of the weekend is a summer-style brew: Munich Weiss, brewed by the Toppling Goliath Brewing Company of Decorah, Iowa.
Serving type: 12-ounce can. “CANNED 01/30/24” is printed on the bottom.
Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is hazy deep gold. An aggressive pour produces a finger of off-white head that dissipates quickly and leaves a collar and spotted skim.
Smell: A proper hefe! Wheat bread, banana, clove, bubble gum, and light cinnamon.
Taste: OK but not as good as the aroma. There are flavors of wheat bread, orange, light banana, clove, light cinnamon. The mouthfeel is soft and soda-like.
Fun facts about Munich Weiss:
• Style: Hefeweizen.
• Price: $11.29 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans at Gary’s in Mount Vernon, Iowa.
• Alcohol content: 5.6 percent ABV.
• Though the cans in this sixer are not old, I feel weird about a hefe brewed (presumably) and canned in January. It seems ironic for a classic and thirst-quenching summer beer to have been brewed in the middle of winter. However, maybe January is when seasonal hefes are brewed. Oktoberfest beers are brewed in March, so I suppose it makes sense that hefeweizens would be brewed in the winter.
The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
