Beer of the Weekend #1,063: Frail

The beer of this snowy, cold weekend is Frail, brewed by Lua Brewing of Des Moines, Iowa.

Frail

Serving type: 16-ounce can. “PKG 11/29/23 FOLLOW FOREVER” is printed on the bottom.

Appearance: Poured into a nonic. The color is a clear reddish brown. A finger of light tan, bubbly, noisy, buttery head leaves a thick collar and bubbly skim.

Smell: Toast, milk chocolate, candy caramel, a hint of cherry licorice, and a light scent of coffee.

Taste: The mouthfeel is light but the flavor provides sweetness and bite with flavors of burnt toast and caramel. A toasted bitterness lingers long after each sip. The beer mellows as it warms and the chocolate, caramel, and cherry licorice become more noticeable; the bitterness weakens a touch.

Fun facts about Frail:

• Style: English dark mild.

• Price: $13.99 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 4.4% ABV.

• Frail is included in the “Continental” group on the Lua Brewing website. The group has this notice: “*Side pull faucet slow pour | Please allow 7-8 minutes to be properly poured.” Sounds like a good pour!
