Beer of the Weekend #1,039: Blue Corn Lager Con Chiles
Not many beers scare me, but the beer tonight—Blue Corn Lager Con Chiles, brewed by the Confluence Brewing Company of Des Moines, Iowa—scares me.
Serving type: 16-ounce can. “CANNED ON JUN/27/23” is printed on the bottom of the can.
Appearance: Poured into my Schlitz pilsner glass. The color is deep amber with a red hue. A finger of head fizzled away before I could take a picture of it.
Smell: It smells like beer and jalapeños. It reminds me of eating at a Mexican restaurant and biting into a jalapeño you did not know was in your burrito.
Taste: Hot. Spicy. What comes to mind is jalapeños and their seeds. It is like almost-too-spicy salsa, one that really burns, where the heat is the flavor. The jalapeño flavor and heat sits on my taste buds, lingering long after each sip. I am not going to finish this because it is far from my cup of tea, but I am going to give it props for being what it is.
Fun facts about Blue Corn Lager Con Chiles:
• Style: Confluence calls it “Lager Con Chiles.”
• Price: Unsure. It was part of my seasonal 12-pack.
• Alcohol content: 6.2 percent ABV.
The Quiet Man’s grade: C.
