Beer of the Weekend #1,023: Lemon-Lime Cheesecake Bar

It’s officially summertime, which means our basement fridge is full of Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandy. It’s a good beer on hot afternoons. Though I reviewed it a few years ago, it inspired me to buy a couple lemon-flavored Iowa-brewed beers. First up is Lemon-Lime Cheesecake Bar, brewed by the Lion Bridge Brewing Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Lemon-Lime Cheesecake Bar

Serving type: 12-ounce can. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a tulip. The color is hazy amber. A finger and a half of bubbly, butter head settles slowly.

Smell: Like a key lime–flavored yogurt. Very sharp and tart. It also smells like a cheesecake with graham cracker crust. I am a big fan of all of those, but I am surprisingly leery about a beer with those scents.

Taste: It is sharp, tart, and funky. There is more lime than anything else, though the cheesecake and graham cracker elements creep in. It is funky, too, and tartness coats the taste buds after each sip. Overall, it is not delicious as it might be if my mother-in-law made it into a cake, but it is still good. I think the sour funk takes away from the other pleasing, dessert-like flavors.

Fun facts about LLCB:

• Style: Fruited sour.

• Price: $12.99 for a four-pack at Benz Beverage Depot in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

• Here is the description via the Lion Bridge website: “Bright and tangy Lemon and Lime blends with a cream cheese finish and a graham cracker crust. Save room for seconds! The Potluck dessert of your dreams.”

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
