Beer of the Weekend #999: KXnO Birthday Bash

The kids were singing “Happy Birthday” while brushing their teeth tonight, so it is fitting that the beer of the weekend was brewed to celebrate a birthday: KXnO Birthday Bash, brewed by the Confluence Brewing Company of Des Moines, Iowa.

KXnO Birthday Bash

Serving type: 16-ounce can. “CANNED ON NOV/03/22” is printed on the bottom.

Appearance: Poured into a nonick. The color is hazy gold. A finger of off-white, bubble-spotted, slightly buttery head leaves a bubbly, buttery skim.

Smell: Citrusy with tropical notes. There are scents of mango, grapefruit, orange or tangerine, and earthy hops. It is smoothie-like and enticing.

Taste: Nothing like the smell, unfortunately. It is much more bitter than I expected, and there is a lot of rind. Though it is not vegetal, there is too much haziness, too much in suspension. The aftertaste is somewhat reminiscent of ashes, like when you take a hit but the bowl is cashed.

Fun facts about Birthday Bash:

• Style: Hazy IPA.

• Price: $10.99 for a four-pack of 16-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 4.6 percent ABV.

• Here are the details and description via the Confluence website:

Des Moines' Sports Station 106.3 KXnO has parntered [sic] with Confluence Brewing Company for years. So when KXnO's 21st birthday was approaching and they needed a great beer for the party, Confluence came through with the perfect brew. A sessionable Hazy IPA packed full of the flavors and aromas of bright citrus, fresh berries, and stone fruits backed by a soft, pillowy body. Despite the big flavors, it has a surprisingly low ABV, so you can enjoy it no matter how long the party goes. It's great for birthday parties, great for game day, and great for anytime. So raise a can, a glass, whatever you've got, to toast 21 great years of sports talk radio in Des Moines- here's to many more years to come!

• I just realized the station’s call letters are a play on Xs and Os.

• The number 999 makes me think of Motörhead’s “Emergency.” 999, the emergency phone number in the UK and many other countries, is featured in the song.

The Quiet Man’s grade: D.
