Beer of the Weekend #940: Zoinks!
A couple weekends ago, I drank Zoinks!, brewed by the Iowa Brewing Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The color is light, honey-like amber or gold. The first can produces a lot of head, which is off-white and bubbly. It dissipates slowly, leaving a lot of lacing stuck to the glass.
The aroma is tropical and citrusy. It smells a lot like a mixed drink. It makes me think of triple sec. There is a lot of grapefruit, and orange is also present and prominent. It has some sharpness and zest.
The flavor is tasty but on the lighter side. It has the tropical fruit and citrus from the aroma, but it is muted. The orange stands out more than anything, but the grapefruit turns it into a nice blend and gives it a smoothie-like character. It has some zest and earthy spice.
Fun facts about Zoinks!
• Style: Session IPA.
• Price: $9.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans at the Wilson Avenue HyVee in Cedar Rapids. This may be the first time I have bought a beer of the weekend in Cedar Rapids. It’s likely to become more common since I’m based in Mount Vernon these days.
• Alcohol content: 4.5 percent ABV.
• IBU: 58.
• Here’s the description on the brewery’s website:
A like totally session-able like Session IPA. With like loads of Mosaic hops! Oh yeah, some Citra too to like bring up the background. This beer is like great for hanging out with your best buds and doggy bud too!
Obviously, Zoinks! Is a references to Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!
The Quiet Man’s grade: B-.
