Good Tunes: Ini Kamoze, 'Here Comes the Hotstepper'
This week’s flashback to 1995 is another tune with Jamaican roots: Ini Kamoze’s “Here Comes the Hotstepper.”
Though it was released as a single in 1994 (per Wikipedia), I always associate the song with 1995. (It is included on the album of the same name, which was released in 1995.) There was quite a bit of reggae fusion on the radio back in the mid-nineties, and “Here Comes the Hotstepper” is one of the songs I remember hearing a lot. It’s a favorite of mine. I remember being at my aunt and uncle’s house sometime in the summer of ‘95, Q103 playing on the radio in the kitchen, my cousin and I singing along to the song. He emphasized the line “EXCUSE ME, Mr. Officer!” and we busted out laughing.
