Beer of the Weekend #788: Goldmine
The beer tonight isn’t beer — it’s hard cider: Goldmine, produced by Wilson’s Orchard of Solon, Iowa.
Wilson’s production facility must be in Solon. The orchard itself, though, has an Iowa City address.
Though I am unsure why, many group beer and cider together. Are they that similar? I assume cider has more in common with wine; it seems to be wine made with apples.
The color is pale yellow. A half-finger of fizzy head fizzles away very quickly, leaving a thin ring around the edge. It looks like a tulip glass full of piss. The aroma is tart and dry and a light scent of apple is most noticeable. It is reminiscent of sparkling apple cider, but the fruit is not as prominent and potent. The flavor is dry and vinous. Tart apple is most prominent. Goldrush, the type of apple used to make Goldmine, apparently contributes tannins, which are also noticeable and definitely add to the vinous quality. There is a touch of vinegar but it is not intrusive.
Fun facts about Goldmine:
• Price: $6.99 per 22-ounce bottle at the New Pioneer Food Co-op in Iowa City.
• Alcohol content: 6 percent ABV.
The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
