Beer of the Weekend #766: Colorado Kölsch
Despite the fact I already have way too many beer glasses, guess what I did on Saturday? I bought another — a 300 ml Sünner Kölsch stange.
It’s something I have wanted, actually, since my 500 ml stange is a too big for 12-ounce and 330 ml kölsches, like tonight’s beer: Colorado Kölsch, brewed by the Steamworks Brewing Company of Durango, Colorado.
The color is light straw with a chill haze. A finger of eggshell-colored head doesn’t stick around for long and leaves a few bubbles and a ring around the edge. The aroma is light but it smells like musty adjuncts, mostly corn. However, lemon zest is also prominent and it segues into a sour yeast aroma. Interesting. The flavor is somewhat reminiscent of cream ale but it is light and a shade tart, metallic, and bitter. The adjunct flavor is there along with lemonade zest and tartness, which reminds me of radler. It also has a fruity club soda character. This beer seems to have quite an identity crisis; it’s a kölsch that is more cream ale and radler than anything else. The bitterness is present as well and lingers on the taste buds after each sip.
Fun facts about Colorado Kölsch:
• Style: Kölsch (apparently).
• Price: $1.99 per 12-ounce can at Tipsy’s Liquor World on Alkire Street in Littleton, Colorado.
• Alcohol content: 4.86 percent ABV.
• IBU: 16.1.
The Quiet Man’s grade: C+.
