Beer of the Weekend #763: Man Beer
A batch of proofs came in yesterday, which meant I needed a beer last night. So I cracked open my bottle of Man Beer, brewed by the Bull & Bush Brewery of Denver, Colorado.
The color is hazy, medium amber. A finger and change of shiny, cream-colored, bubble-spotted head leaves a bubbly skim and thick ring around the edge. I was expecting an American IPA, but the aroma is pleasantly reminiscent of a British IPA with light and toasted malt and floral hops. It is simple, clean, and inviting. The flavor is quite bitter but not offensively aggressive. The malt, though, carries most of the flavor alongside floral hops. Lightly toasted malt, caramel, honey, and a boozy edge are most noticeable. The bitterness, which is astringent and a touch citrusy, and alcohol twist the taste buds and linger on the tonsils and uvula. Hints of fruit sweetness emerge as the beer warms. It has a woody character, too, which is very appropriate.
Fun facts about Man Beer:
• Style: English IPA.
• Price: $5.99 per 16.9 ounce bottle at Tipsy’s Liquor World on Alkire Street in Littleton, Colorado.
• Alcohol content: 7.7 percent ABV.
• Today, by the way, is Equal Pay Day. The fact I’m reviewing Man Beer on Equal Pay Day is just a coincidence, not a veiled political message. I support equal rights and equal pay. Just sayin’.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
