Beer of the Weekend #659: Golden Nugget IPA
Happy Friday the 13th, everyone! Epix is running a Friday the 13th marathon, so I’m gonna sit back, enjoy the first couple movies, and the beer of the weekend: Golden Nugget IPA, brewed by the Toppling Goliath Brewing Company of Decorah, Iowa.
John’s has been stocked with Toppling Goliath brews the last couple Fridays and I couldn’t resist grabbing a couple bottles.
Serving type: 22-ounce bottle. There is no freshness date.
Appearance: It pours a slightly hazy gold color. A finger of buttery, white head settles to a skim and a ring around the edge.
Smell: The aroma is a touch muted but dominated by citrus. There are scents of mango, grapefruit, a little kiwi, and pale malt.
Taste: There is a lot of floral bitterness I was not expecting. It is coupled with flavors of orange, pineapple, kiwi, a little mango, lemon zest, and pine. As the beer warms, the flavors blend together pleasantly and the aggressive bitterness fades.
Drinkability: I like the bitterness but would prefer the flavor to be much more robust. It almost ends up becoming something like a pale lager, similar to New Belgium’s Shift. But it is drinkable and tasty.
Fun facts about GNIPA:
-Style: IPA.
-Price: $6.99/bottle at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.
-Alcohol content: 6 percent ABV.
-IBU: 56.
-The money quote of the night goes to Friday the 13th Part 2: “"Nothing spoils a party faster than a drunk guy in a wheelchair.”
The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
