Beer of the Weekend #658: ChewBOCKa
Today I saw brews from Des Moines’ Exile Brewing Company (http://exilebrewing.com/) on the shelf at John’s. I will need to get some later because the beer of the weekend is from another DSM brewery: ChewBOCKa, brewed by the Confluence Brewing Company of Des Moines, Iowa.
I really like Confluence’s new labels. It will be nice when they start canning, too.
Serving type: 32-ounce mini growler. A batch code is printed on a label affixed to the cap, but there is no discernable freshness date.
Appearance: Pours a medium, mahogany brown with ruby tones into a becker glass. Two fingers of buttery, tight, tan head dissipates gradually and leaves a skim and thin ring around the edge.
Smell: Toasty and nutty with dark fruit. Toasted malt, caramel, toffee, a little cocoa, burnt sugar, a touch of molasses, some kind of nut (chestnut?), and hints of dark fruit.
Taste: The mouthfeel is thick and, yes, chewy. The flavor is a tasty blend. Toasted malt and perhaps toasted nuts (chestnuts?) are most prominent. There are also flavors of burnt sugar, caramel, a little cocoa, molasses, and dark fruit. The alcohol is noticeable, too.
Drinkability: This is a bold and chewy beer. It is tasty and very drinkable.
Fun facts about ChewBOCKa:
-Style: Doppelbock.
-Price: $9.99/bottle at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.
-Alcohol content: 6.5 percent ABV.
-IBU: 28.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.
