The Gems of Sharpless: April 23, 2014
-There were old school, rotary phones galore at Sharpless today. Well — only these, actually. I think this is a good time to reiterate the fact that back in the day, prior to the break-up of Ma Bell, telephones were the property of the phone company and lent to Americans, much as cable boxes are today.
-High school yearbooks are my favorite gems. At Sharpless today were these Muscatine High School yearbooks from 1957–59. I think this one was the ’58 yearbook. The note reads: “The best of luck always to a real nice gal. Have fun while you’re in High school.”
-Bad picture of a 1982 World’s Fair glass.
-Whoa — seaQuest. Now that’s a blast from the past. These models have to be extremely rare nowadays, though I doubt they are worth much money.
-This was an interesting little box full of Hawkeye pins, plus the 1982 Rose Bowl ticket stub. However, the roses in the toilet really threw me for a loop. It doesn’t make much sense to me. Unless, of course, it is a prophetic reference to Outkast’s “Roses.” Obviously not, but I’d like to think so.
-I took a picture of this just because it has been ages since I last saw VHS tapes in rental cases. One of the cases had a Video Update store sticker on it. According to this Minneapolis Star-Tribune article, the last Video Update closed in 2012.
-T-R-A-S-H-Y.
-It’s The Final Countdown! (I remember seeing this for rent at Hagen’s when I was a kid.)
-An old City High basketball, probably from the early-nineties. Ah — cheap, rubber basketballs. They take me back…
-This was an interesting find: a possible predecessor to my Breckenridge Brewery pint glass.
-A cool mug. Outdated, but cool. I’d drink from it.
-A triple-feature DVD of “Reefer Classics.”
