The Gems of Sharpless: August 14, 2013

After a two week hiatus, Gems is back, baby!

-A buffalo head and old fashioned stove were among the items that were front and center today.

-A tableful of Iowa’s state rock: the geode! These things are pricy as hell, so whoever managed to nab these may have a big payday ahead.

-I am a sucker for basketball cards from the early- and mid-nineties, back when I was a big NBA fan and card collector. Among these was my favorite player at the time: Mookie Blaylock, the point guard for the Atlanta Hawks. He was a solid player and had an awesome name. (Believe it or not, Pearl Jam’s original band name was Mookie Blaylock. The title of their first album, Ten, is a reference to Blaylock’s jersey number.)

-Also among the mix of cards was another one of my favorite Atlanta Hawks: Stacy Augmon, the Plastic Man himself.

-“There can only be one!”

-Among a box of Playboys I found the issue from October 1982, my birth month.

-An old reel-to-reel, which are a pretty rare find nowadays.

-The best thing about this Roger Moore VHS (besides the sticker covering the “G” on the front to make the title “OLD”) was the Roman numeral date for the copyright year on the back: MCMLXXXX. It translates to 1990, which is actually supposed to be spelled MCMXC.
