Beer of the Weekend #388: Furious
Good news, everyone: I never bought a four-pack of Surly Abrasive Ale so the hops did not fall after all! Just thought I would let you know.
ANYWAY…
It truly is a bummer because I was planning to drink Abrasive tonight. Instead, though, I will be enjoying a different hop bomb (potentially): Furious, brewed by the Surly Brewing Company of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota.
Serving type: 16-ounce can. The “CANNED ON” date on the bottom of the can is “08/03/12.”
Appearance: Poured into a nonick pint glass. The color is ruby copper. Two fingers of eggshell/lightly tanned head dissipated to leave a thick ring around the edge and a thin lacing.
Smell: It has a nice, citrus hoppiness but is also well-balanced. Grapefruit, lemon, orange, and herbal hops, but there is also a caramel base with toffee and brown sugar.
Taste: It mostly mirrors the smell. Invigorating citrus — grapefruit, orange, and lemon — is compliment by grassy hops, pine, caramel, toffee, and bready malts. It has a pretty dry, metallic aftertaste.
Drinkability: It is quintessential American IPA from the North Star State.
Fun facts about Furious:
-Style: Surly calls it “American Indian Pale Ale” and BA concurs.
-Price: $10.49/four-pack at Richfield Municipal Liquors in Richfield, Minnesota.
-Serving temperature: 45-50ºF.
-Alcohol content: 6.5 percent ABV.
-Food pairings: BA recommends Thai and curried cuisine; peppery, sharp, and pungent cheeses; poultry, fish, shellfish, and salmon.
-IBU: 99.
-Color: 27 SRM.
-Nerdiness from the website and can:
