2012 IHSAA Football, Week 4
Tonight my dad, his friend, and I traveled to Tiffin for the Solon-Clear Creek Amana game. Unsurprisingly, it was a snoozer — 24-0 at halftime. CCA moved the ball but could not score. Defensively, the Clippers could not stop the Spartans. (What crazy imagery, huh? Majestic clipper ships being attacked and burned by ruthless Spartans.)
Frankly, I would have rather gone to Lone Tree tonight, but whatever. It was a perfect night for high school football no matter where we were. The sky was streaked with high, cirrus clouds that caught the deep oranges, reds, and purples of the setting sun. At kickoff the announcer said the temperature was 70 degrees — and it kept getting cooler. People were dressed in jeans and sweatshirts, and some where wrapped in blankets. After the sun set it was pretty chilly. It was awesome. Football weather, baby.
However, the most interesting part of our night come after we left the game and paid a visit to the Hilltop Tavern for a beer. Sitting together at a couple tables, constantly being supplied fresh pitchers of beer, was the coaching staff of the Regina Regals. Head coach, and legendary Hawkeye, Marv Cook sat at the head of the table. Regina played some pipsqueak of an opponent and beat them 52-14, so the coaches were enjoying wings and brews afterward. We sat next to them and my dad said, “They’re Catholic. They drink.”
Yes they do, and they did.
