African Warriors: 2012 Sundays CoRec E League Tourney Champions

Last evening, my softball team clobbered the undefeated regular season champions, 15-5, to capture the league tournament championship.

I could say it was unbelievable, but that is not completely true. We had a great team and had a lot of fun this season. We were clicking throughout the three-game tournament; everyone caught the hitting bug as it spread through the line-up. Even I, the weakest link, hit .500 during the home stretch. (Honestly, I probably had six or seven hits all season — half of which came during the tourney.) We lit-up our semi-final opponent so badly that the pitcher threw his glove and signature visor to the dirt of the infield when the 10-run mercy rule was called.

The Defenestrators were up next. They are a tight-knit group of salty veterans who also play in a weekday league. (I assumed they use our league for practice.) They wear pants and batting gloves. They take it seriously. They are cocky and everyone hates them. They breezed through the regular season with a 12-0 record and beat their two other tourney opponents 10-0 and 13-9. They even beat our team in the first game of the season. However, as Pantera sang, yesterday don’t mean shit.

It really did not because we pounded them. Line drives were flying between the shortstop and second baseman. Our defense kept their heavy hitters in check and our pitcher was throwing his best game of the season. We hit the 10-run mercy rule, but it is the home team’s choice of having it enforced and The Defenestrators were not about to lie down in defeat. So we beat them in seven — without a number of our regular players.

Champions! We even got two snazzy plaques from the Rec Department: one for the tournament title and another for being runners-up in the regular season.
