Beer of the Weekend #203: Breckenridge Oatmeal Stout
Tonight I have taken the Mobile Beer Reviewing Unit (aka my MacBook) to Bobblehead’s for a remote edition of BotW. I am sampling brew and enjoying some good conversation about sex at the same time.
The beer of the weekend is a brew I tried long ago but have not had since: Breckenridge Oatmeal Stout, brewed by the Breckenridge Brewery of Denver, Colorado.
Serving type: Six 12-ounce bottles. There is a cryptic batch code printed on the shoulder, but nothing I can find to resemble a freshness date.
Appearance: Straight pour into a pint glass. The color is an almost opaque black; when I held it to a lamp, light passed through to created ruby hues. Two fingers of slightly tanned head developed and dissipated to leave a spotted lacing and ring around the edge.
Smell: It has a smooth and creamy aroma. A nice blend of chocolate and coffee malts, which are not toasted. Oatmeal gives it a nice creaminess.
Taste: Surprisingly toasty compared to the aroma, which is a big plus. However, it is a little watered down and not as thick as I like. Toasted coffee, chocolate, and caramel malts. The oatmeal keeps the overall experience smooth and easy drinking.
Drinkability: A very straightforward stout that is true to style and tasty drinking. Nothing exceptional, but there’s nothing wrong with that here.
Fun facts about BOS:
-Style: Oatmeal Stout.
-Price:$8.99/sixer at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.
-Serving temperature: 50-55ºF.
-Alcohol content: 4.95 percent ABV.
-Food pairings: BA recommends earthy cheeses (Camembert, Fontina), chocolate, chocolate dessert, shellfish, and smoked meat. The Breckenridge Brewery recommends a recipe for Oatmeal Stout Beer-B-Q Sauce. On the bottom of the carrier is also a recipe for an Oatmeal Stout milkshake.
-IBU: 31.
-Here is some cool, and true, verbage from the bottom of the carrier:
I have never had beer for breakfast, but I will admit to having it for dessert.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B+.

It takes a certain type of person to truly appreciate a dark stout. For the devoted beer drinker, the rules are simple: The beer must be creamy and smooth with chocolate flavors and roasted coffee undertones. They enjoy it with breakfast. They enjoy it with lunch. And many have discovered it makes the perfect dessert.
I have never had beer for breakfast, but I will admit to having it for dessert.
