Beer of the Weekend #1,159: Penrose Light

The beer of the weekend came from an area of John’s that I don’t venture to very often: Penrose Light, brewed by the Penrose Brewing Company of Geneva, Illinois.

Penrose Light

Serving type: 16-ounce can. “CANNED 12:55 03/27/26 HOT AS HELLES” is printed on the bottom of the can.

Appearance: Pours a pale straw into a pilsner glass. (It’s been a while since I used my New Glarus pilsner glass. BA recommends using a flute for helles, and this is the closest thing I have.) A white, dense, buttery head settles slowly and evenly.

Smell: Light and corny. It smells a little like Alka Seltzer, or at least the effervescence gives it that characteristic. There is a touch of zest. It’s light beer.

Taste: Really light. There is not a lot of flavor; it is basically Busch Light with a little zest and bitterness. There are hints of malt, bread, and honey.

Fun facts about Penrose Light:

• Style: German helles.

• Price: $15.99 for a 4-pack of 16-ounce cans. This is probably the most expensive light beer I have ever had.

• Alcohol content: 5 percent ABV.

• Here is the description via the brewery website: “Discover the new golden elixir with Penrose Light, a meticulously crafted German-style Helles beer that captivates with its crispness, balanced flavors, and timeless brewing traditions. Prost to an unforgettable taste experience!”

The Quiet Man’s grade: D.
