Beer of the Weekend #1,066: Fox Head Beer

The Fox Head is among my favorite bars in Iowa City. It is a no-nonsense mid-century time capsule, the type of place featured in Martin Scorsese movies based in the sixties and seventies. It is the perfect place to drink a couple pints and solve the world’s problems with a good friend, which is what I like to do in bars.

Among the old beer signs hanging on the Fox Head’s walls is one for Fox Head Beer. It was no doubt a relic from a bygone era and I was always curious about the beer. So I was happily surprised to see a revival on the shelves at John’s.

The beer of the weekend is Fox Head Beer, brewed by NoCoast Beer Company of Oskaloosa, Iowa, for Crystal Dreams Brewing of Iowa City, Iowa.

Fox Head Beer

Serving type: 12-ounce can. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a pilsner glass. The color is pale gold. A finger of white, buttery, bubbly head fizzles away quickly and leaves a broken skim in the middle of the glass and a thin collar.

Smell: A dive-bar beer. It is light, sweet, and malty with hints of fruit and some earthy/grassy hops. There is a touch of spice and zest as well.

Taste: It is much like the aroma but lighter. Light malts, which seem to be mostly adjuncts, and a hint of hop bitterness. It is sweet with a hint of esters.

Fun facts about Fox Head Beer:

• Style: Pilsner, I assume.

• Price: $11.99 for a sixer of 12-ounce cans at John’s Grocery in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 4.8 percent ABV.

• Here the story about the beer on foxhead.beer:

Crystal Dreams Brewing of Iowa City is proud to announce the return of Fox Head Beer. Founded in 1893 Fox Head Beer is one of the earliest Midwest Beer brands. Fox Head Beer survived Prohibition by selling soft drinks &  unfermented malt beverages. After Prohibition and when beer supplies were inconsistent, Fox Head Beer contracted with bars to adopt the name Fox Head in exchange for a consistent supply of beer. The most iconic of all these Fox Heads is the only one still in business: Dave’s Fox Head Tavern in Iowa City.

• One thing I love at the Fox Head is all the names carved into the tables. Though they are now covered with a clear coat of epoxy or something, I was able to kind of carve my first name or initials into one table in college. I assume it is still there. I need to check.

• Along with being available in sixers, Fox Head Beer can be found on tap at … the Fox Head!
