Beer of the Weekend #1,059: Czech Dark

The beer of the weekend is Czech Dark, brewed by the Lion Bridge Brewing Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Czech Dark

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “10/30/2023” is printed on the bottom.

Appearance: Poured into a pilsner glass. It looks good! The color is deep, deep brown, almost black. A finger of dense, light tan head settles slowly and evenly.

Smell: Roasted and chocolaty. It is a big dose of roasted malt that imparts caramel and chocolate. There is a little bit of molasses and dark fruit.

Taste: Oooo. It is nice and roasted. It mostly mirrors the aroma with chocolate and roasted malts. There is also caramel and a touch of coffee. The roasted malt and hops have a nice bite and leave a lasting bitterness. The roasted bitterness is not like stout, though; it is smooth and lager-like. There are hints of dark esters but they are fleeting.

Fun facts about Czech Dark:

• Style: Lion Bridge calls it “Dark Czech-Style Lager.”

• Price: $12.19 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans.

• Alcohol content: 5.2 percent ABV.

• Here is the description via the brewery website: “Subtle roast and chocolate flavors with a Czech Pilsner Malt base and a touch of Czech Saaz hops. A long, cool fermentation and lagering produces this exceptionally easy drinking beer.”
