Beer of the Weekend #966: ReUnion Amber Ale

Last weekend, I picked up a sixer of Amber Ale, brewed by the ReUnion Brewery of Coralville, Iowa.

ReUnion Amber Ale

Serving type: 12-ounce can. “CANNED 03:01:22” is printed on the bottom of the can.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is deep amber. A finger of light tan, bubbly head leaves a collar and spotted skim.

Smell: Toasty, bready, caramel, chocolate, honey, nuts. It tastes and smells like Christmas, but it is lighter and has an adjunct character—no doubt from the corn it is brewed with. (The can description says it is “brewed with locally grown corn” and the Iowa Corn logo is included on the label.)

Taste: I have not had a beer like this in a while. It reminds me of the ambers that were in style in the mid-ohs, or at least when I started drinking microbrews. It has a nice bite and a touch of rye spice. The flavor is light from the corn, though, but I get caramel, chocolate, a hint of cherry licorice.

Fun facts about Amber Ale:

• Style: Amber ale.

• Price: $11.29 for a sixer of 12-ounce cans at Gary’s in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

• Alcohol content: 4.5 percent ABV.

• Despite the fact the brewery and taproom are in Coralville, the can says the beer was “brewed and canned by ReUnion Brewery in Iowa City, Iowa.” Interesting…
