Beer of the Weekend #857: KC Pils

The beer of the weekend is part of a custom six-pack of Boulevard beers given to me by a family acquaintance who now lives in Kansas City: KC Pils, brewed by the Boulevard Brewing Company of Kansas City, Missouri.

The color is clear, beautiful gold. A half finger of beige, tight, bubbly, buttery head leaves a skim and ring around the edge.

The aroma is light and grainy. There’s a little bit of grass and a little bit of zest, but more grass than zest.

The flavor is also light and has light zest. It is grassy and has a light caramel flavor. It has a nice, earthy bitterness. Light is no doubt the buzzword for this beer, because it is light and tasty, just as a pilsner should be. It is nothing special, though; it’s a run-of-the-mill pilsner.

Fun facts about KC Pils:

• Style: Pilsner. “Kansas City lager” is written on the label, but it’s a pilsner.

• Price: It was a gift. I have no clue why this woman felt compelled to give me a custom sixer, but she is very proud of Kansas City for some reason. I’ve only driven through Kansas City, so perhaps a trip there would be worthwhile.

• Alcohol content: 4.8 percent ABV.

• IBU: 20.

• Color: 10 EBC. I believe this is the first time I have seen an American brewery use EBC, the color scale for the European Brewery Convention. SRM is the scale used by the American Society of Brewing Chemists. I wonder why Boulevard uses EBC.

The Quiet Man’s grade: C/C+.
