Beer of the Weekend #848: Uinta Golden Ale
Though August has passed, it is still technically summer, which means I will continue to avoid IPAs—at least for another week.
The beer of the weekend is Golden Ale, brewed by the Uinta Brewing Company of Salt Lake City, Utah.
The color is clear, clean gold. A finger of beige, thick, bubble-spotted head dissipates slowly, leaving a skim in the center and a frothy ring around the edge. The aroma is light but well balanced with earthy hops and light malt. The mouthfeel is full and creamy, and the first sip features the same balance from the aroma, though it does have an earthy bite. It is hoppier than it is malty, but the malt does come through. The earthy spice is reminiscent of rye. The bitterness and herbal spice work the taste buds, but are not overwhelming.
Fun facts about Golden Ale:
• Style: Golden ale.
• Price: $9.99 for a six-pack of 12-ounce cans at the “Drug Town” on First Avenue and Rochester in Iowa City.
• Alcohol content: 5 percent ABV.
• IBU: 21.
• Color: 5 SRM.
• Cans of Golden Ale feature a rotation of designs “to raise awareness and appreciation for America's Parks.” The six-pack I bought is part of the series’ third release, which honors Arches National Park.
The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
