Beer of the Weekend #832: Huma Lupa Licious
The beer of the weekend is the other beer my boss had waiting for me in his fridge when I arrived in East Lansing: Huma Lupa Licious, brewed by Short’s Brewing of Elk Rapids, Michigan.
The color is hazy, deep golden amber. A finger of buttery, beige, bubble-spotted head dissipates unevenly and leaves lacing stuck to the glass. The aroma is amazing and well balanced. Though it probably leans malty with scents of caramel, toasted malt, dark esters, and cocoa, subtle characters of orange, grapefruit, and flowers portend hoppiness. (It does weigh in at 96 IBU.) Overall, the aroma is a pleasing and inviting mélange — which is also a great generalization of the flavor. Much like the aroma, the flavor is well balanced but probably leans malty with flavors of caramel, toasted malt, dark esters, and hints of citrus. It is floral, too, and the bitterness really works the taste buds. Slowly but surely as the beer warms, the citrus becomes much more prominent. It truly is very ‘licious.

• Price: I’m unsure since it was a gracious welcoming gift. It is, no doubt, an excellent perk of my job. It definitely relieves some of the stress of processing piles of accepted manuscripts.
