Beer of the Weekend #808: Special Snowflake

The special thing I’m thinking about doing this month is revisiting many of my favorite beers. However, I did not do that this week.

The beer of the weekend is Special Snowflake, brewed by the Lion Bridge Brewing Company of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

The color is clear, clean, light bronze. A finger of beige-colored, bubbly, buttery head leaves a bubbly skim and ring around the edge. The aroma is citrusy and bright, very energizing. There are scents of grapefruit, spicy lemon zest, orange, light wheat, and a touch of tropical fruit. The flavor is as fresh and energizing as the aroma, much like a freshly cut orange or lemon. It is deceptively balanced, though — almost tricky. It has a nice malty flavor that is countered with lemon, orange, and grapefruit. It is a touch wheaty and has a pleasing floral spice, which lingers on the taste buds. Though not necessarily a traditional winter beer, it is really smooth, enjoyable, easy drinking, and flavorful.

Fun facts about Special Snowflake:

• Style: White IPA.

• Price: $9 for a 64-ounce growler fill at the North Dodge Hy-Vee in Iowa City.

• Alcohol content: 6.2 percent ABV.

The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
