Beer of the Weekend #696: The Randonneur
The beer of the weekend is one of the goodies Bobblehead brought back for me on his recent trip to the Twin Cities: The Randonneur, brewed by the Fulton Brewery of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Randonneur pours a cloudy, dirty gold with an amber tint. A finger of eggshell-colored head dissipates unevenly, leaving peaks and valleys. Lots of funky, spicy, sour farmhouse yeast aroma greets the nose. It smells like there is lemon zest and some different citrus underneath. The flavor is thankfully not as sour as the aroma led me to believe, but the funk and spice are there. The spice tickles the taste buds long after each sip. The mouthfeel is thick and smooth, much like a wheat ale. Other than the flavors of funk and spice, there are flavors of lemon zest and perhaps the tropical fruit mentioned on the brewery’s description. It mentions melon, too, and I do get hints of that. Thankfully, though, there is not much (I hate muskmelon). It is a tasty and easy drinking brew.
Fun facts about The Randonneur:
• Style: Fulton calls it “Summer Saison.”
• Price: $8.99 per six-pack at Richfield Municipal Liquors in Richfield, Minnesota. (Bobblehead conveniently left the receipt in the bag.)
• Alcohol content: 4.1 percent ABV.
• IBU: 23.
• Color: 7 SRM.
• In collaboration with General Mills, Fulton will soon release a Wheaties-themed beer, HefeWheaties. To be honest, I do not think I have ever eaten Wheaties. I may have to buy some. I also may have to make a quick trip to the Twin Cities at the end of the month…
The Quiet Man’s grade: B.
